The predominantly large format oil paintings by the young Mongolian artist (*1977) fascinate through their colours, appearing like the stage sets of a surreal theatre production. Whilst Gama refuses to see anything more than ‘paint on canvas’, the elf-like figures in the paintings, which are extremely small in comparison to the rest of the visual content, convey a feeling of loneliness, forlornness and fear. He originally came to Germany in order to get to know the old masters “in the flesh”. His concern is the essence of painting and in doing he operates amongst the traces of art history. Yet, at the same time his work is fully autonomous, and he succeeds in creating mysterious new worlds through his surreal and fantastic visual inventions.
