Gary Simmons

Using popular cultural references as his point of departure, Gary Simmons established his reputation in the early 1990s with a body of work addressing identity. Since the mid-1990s, his work has increasingly encompassed a wide range of cultural meaning, often inspired by objects and images from the American vernacular landscape. Gary Simmons will feature erasure drawings on paper, canvas and blackboard, as well as a site-specific wall drawing. Also included are two new large-scale sculptures as well as photographs and videos. This exhibition is curated by Thelma Golden and co-organized by The Studio Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. A fully-illustrated exhibition catalogue with essays by Thelma Golden, Maurice Berger and Franklin Sirmans is available.
