Gerhard Richter - A private collection

CAC Málaga presented a selection of paintings by the emblematic Gerhard Richter (Dresden, 1932), surely one of the most significant artist of the second half of the 20th Century. It was a journey through the Richter’s most representative pictorial production between 1960 and 2003, showing a group of works in which he proved, once more, that his work cannot be considered as part of any particular style.

30 works conformed the exhibition, showing the absolutely versatile character of the artist. Realistic painting based upon photographic models, his well-known gray paintings and, specially, the abstract expressionism were the prevailing tendencies in the selection, in which we could find different genres such as landscapes, portraits and geometrical compositions.

In every of these works, Gerhard Richter showed his virtuosity at mastering a pictorial language he commands with extraordinary talent. Considered as one of the most influential contemporary artists, Richter studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Dresden. In the seventies, he moved to West Germany, and he attended the Kunst Academy in Düsseldorf, where he got in contact with artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Alberto Giacometti, Jean Fautrier and the anarchic movement Fluxus, a Dada revival.

In the course of his artistic trajectory, Gerhard Richter has been known by his skills in figuration as well as abstraction. His work stood out in a context in which painting was considered by many as an obsolete mean of artistic expression, finished and destined to disappear due to the arrival of the new technologies to the artistic scene.
