Opening Reception: Friday, September 8th 6—8 PM

The Happy Lion is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by Romanian twin brothers Gert and Uwe Tobias. The new series consists of works on paper produced in a variety of media, including acrylic, ink, and collage. Gleaning imagery from the folklore surrounding their native Transylvania, the works portray ghoulish yet whimsical figures rendered in unexpected colors and playful poses. While intensely expressive, the pieces also offer up surprising humor.

Gert and Uwe Tobias were born in Brasov, Romania, in 1973. They graduated from the Hochschule für bildende Künste, Braunschweig, Germany, in 2002 and in 2004 were awarded the Peter Mertens Scholarship from the Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn. They have had solo shows at Galerie Michael Janssen, Cologne; at Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna; The Breeder, Athens and at Galerie Rodolphe Janssen in Brussels. Recent group exhibitions of their work include those at Team Gallery, New York; Galerie Eva Winkeler, Franfurt; and Völcker & Freunde, Berlin.

The Tobias's solo debut at The Happy Lion coincides with their first solo exhibition at a US Museum. The UCLA Hammer Museum will present the Tobias brothers as part of Hammer Projects from September 12, 2006 through January 14, 2007.
