Gil & Moti: Totally Devoted To You

Kunsthallen Nikolaj in Copenhagen (Denmark), Lentos Kunstmuseum in Linz (Austria), Museum Bochum in Bochum (Germany), the Stavanger Kunstmuseum in Stavanger (Norway) and Tensta Konsthall in Stockholm (Sweden) have developed together an international presentation of the Israeli born artist duo Gil & Moti. Five institutions from five countries have come together to present a series of exhibitions, live events and performances to take place between 2011 and 2012 titled Gil & Moti: Totally Devoted to You.

It says a great deal about the significance of the artists' work that five leading centres for contemporary art have joined forces to show pieces spanning a decade of artistic production. It is also critical for the project that the couple will also produce public works in each city in dialogue with the specific communities found in each location. Gil & Moti themselves have been resident in the Netherlands since 1998, living their lives as a continual performance always working directly with the communities about them. They have established a manner of working that includes painting, installation, video, photography printmaking and direct actions and interventions in the public space. Their work challenges our conventions of identity, politics and art making and as such is as equally relevant to the locations of all the five venues as it is to their own homes. The exhibition marks an important assessment of the artists' work to date, as well as showing their most recent undertakings and as such firmly places them in the forefront of international art. To accompany the exhibitions a major new catalogue of the artists' work has been produced by the five host institutions, published by Hatje Cantz Verlag and includes essays by the curators and by Catrin Lundqvist from Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

Gil (1968) Moti (1971) have been working & living together since 1994. They studied together at Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, and at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem. Gil also studied at The Slade School of Art, in London and Moti at SVA in New York. They have had numerous exhibitions including solo shows at: Metis NL - Amsterdam (2010), Medialab Enschede - Enschede (2010), Galerie Eric Dupont - Paris (2009), TENT - Rotterdam (2008), Art Center, Haifa Museum of Art - Haifa (2008), Kulturhuset - Stockholm (2007), De Praktijk - Amsterdam (2006), Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig - Vienna (2004), Moderna Museet - Stockholm (2005) and at the Venice Biennial (2002).
