Grace Cossington Smith

Grace Cossington Smith (1892–1984) played a leading role in the development of early twentieth-century art in Australia. Her striking paintings and drawings of the Sydney Harbour Bridge under construction in the late 1920s were potent symbols of a new, modernised Australia. These works, together with her innovative still lifes and home interiors, make her one of the period’s most important artists. Featuring more than 100 paintings and drawings from public and private collections, this National Gallery of Australia travelling exhibition also includes 20 of the artist’s sketchbooks, and surveys the full span of her career from 1910 to 1971.
