Iris Hoppe and Olaf Hirschberg present a joint project with the Archbishop of Cologne, Cardinal Meisner.
The starting point of the interventionist work is a discussion with the cardinal, which is uncommon in the contemporary art discourse, about the subjects "crosser of borders" and "creator of borders". In the course of the discussion, the artists show excerpts from the video performance Balance (Iris Hoppe) and from the short film Auf der Strecke (Olaf Hirschberg) to the Cardinal.
At the exhibition, this discussion is documented by means of a large-format slide in a light box and transformed by an electronic light writing. Both image and text come from the documentation material of the performative discussion situation.
The text modules from the discussion presented investigate the motif of the line in the widest sense: between indifference and attention, as a criticism of two-dimensionality, its meaning as a border, and its delineation toward delimitation and freedom. The line becomes a symbol of the securing of evidence in arts. In GRENZGÄNGER / GRENZZIEHER the line is disguised in its lingual form and positions itself at the encounter between art and public space.
