press release

The National Gallery of Victoria’s next Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series exhibition will present postwar and contemporary art from the worldwide collections of the famous Guggenheim Museum. The exhibition, whose working title is Guggenheim Collection 1940s to now: New York – Venice – Bilbao – Berlin, will feature iconic artworks from the 1940s to the present by internationally renowned artists such as Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Roy Lichtenstein, Gilbert & George, and Jeff Koons.

While the majority of the presentation will be drawn from the holdings of the Guggenheim Museum in New York, select masterpieces from other Guggenheim collections in Venice, Bilbao, and Berlin will also be featured. The exhibition will introduce artists whose work has never been seen before in Melbourne, and some of the Guggenheim’s most recent acquisitions will be premiered here–they have not even been shown as yet in New York.

This will be the first time ever that the Guggenheim collections have been seen in Melbourne. This exhibition is exclusive to the National Gallery of Victoria and will not travel to any other Australian city, or anywhere else in the world. More details about this exciting presentation of postwar and contemporary art from the global Guggenheim will be announced shortly.

This exhibition has been organised by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, and the National Gallery of Victoria.
