Günther Selichar’s highly detailed, large-scale digital photographs of “media machines” are inspired by a strain of mid-20th century abstract painting that referenced its own making as the subject of the work. Similarly, Selichar’s photographs expose elements of media machines that cannot be seen by the naked eye, such as the matrixes of “cold” computer screens, or the red, blue, and green pixels that make up what we see as white on a screen. Selichar formally excavates digital apparatuses to show the pervasive impact technological mechanisms have on our everyday lives. His work scrutinizes the machines of mass media in the hope that viewers will “hold a microscope” to and think critically about the effects of mass media.

In association with the exhibition, Selichar has conceived a multi-faceted public intervention that co-opts traditional advertising spaces. Those who encounter these spaces and sites will be provoked to look critically at how we consume media and information.
