press release

Many streets in Central Africa are named after the Congolese politician of independence, Patrice Lumumba, who was assassinated in 1961 with the help of the CIA. Guy Tillim’s work consists of approximately 60 large photographs of modernist architecture in Congo, Angola, Mozambique, Benin and Madagascar which the colonial powers erected shortly before those countries were liberated. His work addresses the failed utopias of the former rulers and the difficulties African peoples face creating their own place. Specifically these photos invite the Portuguese public to take account of their own colonial past.
