Howard Hodgkin: Time and Place - paintings 2000-2010

This exhibition focuses on Howard Hodgkin’s paintings of places and moments in time as subjective expressions of visual sensation. The exhibition spans ten years of the artist’s career and will include many paintings not previously seen by a broader public, including a powerful body of new work developing out of Home, Home On the Range series of 2008. Together, they will highlight the physical as well as emotional charge of Hodgkin’s art through his use of scale, sensitivity to light and his ability to create painterly equivalents of depth and atmosphere.


While exhibitions in recent years have looked at Hodgkin’s work either in terms of specific genres or types  –interiors, large paintings– or as full-scale retrospective. Howard Hodgkin: Time and Place offers a fresh view of the artist’s work and reveals his continuing relevance as one of the most vital and compelling painters of our time. 



Howard Hodgkin was born in London in 1932 and attended Camberwell School of Art and the Bath Academy of Art, Corsham. In 1984, he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale. In 1985 he was awarded the Turner Prize. He has exhibited internationally for over four decades and his work is included in major public private collections all over the world. Museum surveys include Paintings 1975-1995, organised by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, which opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and toured to Fort Worth, Düsseldorf, London and a retrospective presented at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, (2006), Tate Britain and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid.

Howard Hodgkin Time and Place is organised by Modern Art Oxford in partnership with the De Pont Foundation, Tilburg, and the San Diego Museum of Art.
