25 years Berlin-Buenos Aires
25.06.2019 - 27.10.2019

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the alliance between Berlin and Buenos Aires, and in the context of BIENALSUR, this exhibition explores parallel spaces of experience on both sides of the Atlantic. Four artistic positions of both cities are presented that question the relationship between subjective and collective experience and the way in which they are transmitted. The selected works highlight historical, economic and biographical fractures that shape cultural identity individually.

The work Beweis zu nichts (Proof of Nothing), by Marcel Odenbach (b. 1953), illuminates the turbulent history of the memorial monument of the Buchenwald concentration camp and its ideological culture of memory. Gabriela Golder (n. 1971), in her work On the other side, she uses personal stories of refugees and migrants to create an imaginary space that establishes a direct link between the past and the present, between the Immigrant Hotel and the countries of origin of the emigrants. Both the work They Shoot Horses (Edith Dekyndt (n. 1960), and the monumental sculpture of Eduardo Basualdo (n. 1977) evoke silent images that make the elusive and inexpressible perceptible.

The title of the exhibition deliberately quotes the homonymous novel Direkt danach und kurz davor, by Frank Witzel, about the silence of the post-war generation in Germany.
