press release

The title refers to the unexpected content of the works, to the invisibility of artists from Iraq and the diaspora to the international scene, as well as the many different ways of approaching art generated by a country that has been subjected to war, genocide, violations of human rights and the recent rise of Isis. The systematic destruction of Iraq’s cultural heritage has made it more important than ever to focus on artists continuing to work in their own country. In cooperation with the Ruya Foundation, Philippe van Cauteren selected the photographers Latif Al Ani and Akam Shex Hadi, performance artist Rabab Ghazoul, ceramicist and sculptor Salam Atta Sabri and painter Haider Jabbar.
