Invisible Ideas Donald Urquhart: Drawings 1977-2007

Invisible Ideas, Donald Urquhart: Drawings 1977 - 2007, is the first in a new strand of solo exhibitions at the City Art Centre, designed to support and promote the work of contemporary artists either based in Edinburgh or who have connections with the city.

Although probably best known for his public art, including The Sanctuary at the New Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, this is Urquhart’s first exhibition in which he exclusively presents drawings as completed works in their own right.

Invisible Ideas showcases a body of drawings completed in 2007 which explore Urquhart’s ongoing engagement with the Highland landscape as well as material from time he spent in Japan, Norway, China and Iceland.

The exhibition is prefaced by a very early work from 1977, which displays the analytical observation that remains essential to his work today.

Donald Urquhart is one of the leading Scottish artists of his generation and produces profound and thought-provoking work, which has been shown nationally and internationally.

Donald lives and works in Edinburgh, with a studio at WASPS in Stockbridge, teaches at Edinburgh College of Art, and typifies the creativity that flourishes in the city.

Invisible Ideas opens on 1 December 2007 and continues until 16 February 2008. Admission to the exhibition is free.
