press release

Isabel Albrecht’s works stand out in particular for their treatment of lines. The lines vary in number, thickness, and application in serial works that are grid-like and follow definite patterns. In making her pictures, the parameters the artist had pre-established were conveyed to the picture support in precise, repetitive applications. Albrecht’s drawings display a profound engagement with systems, patterns, and repetition. Her treatment of color and line creates images with gradients of hue that lend the works a three-dimensional aspect. Simultaneously, the drawings seem to suggest that the sequences of adjacent lines could be potentially continued to infinity.
The artist, who died in 2013, has worked in a studio at basis e.V. for several years. The production and exhibition platform will be showing a comprehensive overview of Isabel Albrecht’s earlier works through to her late oeuvre.
