press release

The exhibition shows works by one of Europe's leading stage designers for the contemporary theatre. Since the opening of the legendary experimental theatre venue "Die Baracke" at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1997, the works of the architect and stage designer Jan Pappelbaum (b. 1966) have made a distinctive mark on Germany's progressive theatre environment. Jan Pappelbaum's interest in theatre began when he met the student stage director Thomas Ostermeier. Their friendship has since developed into one of the most interesting and productive artistic collaborations in contemporary German theatre, resulting in productions such as "Nora" (A Doll's House) and "Hedda Gabler". Unconventional Stage Designs
Pappelbaum's designs, with their clear and surprising references to modernism and postmodernism, reflect his background as an architect. He creates complex, transparent, unconventional stage sets - open spaces that abolish the boundary between the auditorium and the stage. Broad Presentation
The exhibition presents selected set designs that illustrate Pappelbaum's work during his period as set designer of the Berliner Schaubühne since 2000. Models, photographs and film material all contribute to a broad presentation of his production, working methods and sources of inspiration. The exhibition is produced by Theater der Zeit, Berlin, and Goethe-Institut Norwegen. It is presented in collaboration with the National Museum, the Nationaltheateret and the Berliner Schaubühne.
