press release

Jane South's complex paper constructions navigate the properties of drawing and sculpture. She assembles fragile architectural networks from painted paper that has been meticulously cut, folded, tabbed and then glued together. Her motifs, drawn from a lexicon of invented architectural and industrial forms, create intricate shadows that further confuse our perception of what is heavy or light, what is flat or three-dimensional, what is solid form or pictorial illusion. Rather than serving as a contrast to the supposed solidity and permanence of the museum gallery, her works remind us of the temporality of all architecture. Organized by Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA, Infrastructures includes wall and floor-based works, and a selection of new drawings.

Jane South received her MFA from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield CT, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), North Adams, Whitney Museum at Altria, New York and The Drawing Center, New York. She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award and an award from the MASS MOCA Cultural Council.
