press release

The Canadian artist Jeff Wall (b.1946) has since the late 1970s worked with transparent photographs placed in illuminated advertisement display cases since1977. In this exhibition we focus on the art-historical connections in his work, where pointers to celebrated historical achievements in art are frequently in evidence. But rather than pursuing scenic reconstructions, Jeff Wall uses references to specific details to widen the horizons of meaning and function. The art photographer Jeff Wall, who is also a trained art historian, has made a lot of staged art works based on a subtle connection between people and situations. At first, the pictures may look like snapshots, but at closer examination Wall’s photographs reveal interesting reflections on human relations and aesthetical aspects. Pressetext
