Jiří Georg Dokoupil (b. 1954) is one of the most prominent representatives of contemporary painting in the world. Having returned from his studies in New York, he co-founded the radical art groups Mülheimer Freiheit and Die neuen Wilden that were developing new ideas and painting methods. The stimuli resulting from members of these groups contributed to the beginnings of Postmodernism, which fundamentally influenced the European arts scene. Dokoupil is one of the few Czech artists to have achieved a leading position in an international context and to have impacted the overall development of contemporary painting. Often using experimental painting methods, he creates series of paintings. In Brno, he will display two series from recent years that relate to his original background - paintings using the motif of Prague Castle, and pigment paintings with skulls. The author paraphrases the commercial use of the constantly repeated motif of Prague Castle in connection with associations inherent to his generation, and he makes excellent painting interpretations of still-lifes with skulls, whose semantic context reflects the present. Exhibition curators: Jana Vránová and Pavel Liška.
