The awkwardness of living and dying simultaneously

"When standing in front of an artifact in a museum there is an odd dissociation between the thing we are looking at now and its previous life. It lived carrying out its function at one point in history but is simply now a shell to be viewed at a distance from a glass cabinet.

The works presented explore the timelessness of living eternally in the present. Neither alive nor dead they sit in a pause and like relics on display exist on the threshold of this world and the next. Flipping in and out of a story. These quasi living/relic artifacts are landmarks, reminders of what we once used to know but have forgotten. For a moment existing in multiple universes; a time travel that is instantaneous and can move in any direction on an interconnecting time frame where all of history coalesces into one frozen moment."

Joanna Mortreux has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from RMIT and graduated with honours from The University of Melbourne. She completed an arts residency at TAKT Kunstprojektraum in Berlin, Germany in 2011 and SIM Artist Residency in Reykjavik, Iceland. She has exhibited at the Robert Wright Gallery and Parker Project Space in Chicago 2012, at Kunstraum Tapir in Berlin in 2011 and in Melbourne at the Donkey Wheel House, Extended Play Gallery, Bus Gallery, Gallery 31, Kick Gallery and Brunswick Street Gallery. She has been the recipient of the Julie Millowick Photography "Packers Prize", the Kingston 24 Hour Arts Blitz 1st Prize and the Dandenong Festival of Music and Art 1st Prize. Her work can also be found in numerous private collections in Australia, France, New Zealand and Chicago.
