Job Koelewijn - Jump

The first major exhibition in the UK by the Dutch installation artist Job Koelewijn breathtakingly transforms Chisenhale Gallery’s space.

Koelewijn installed a false floor and ceiling into the gallery, and sunk large circular trampolines into the floor, each corresponding to a black hole in the ceiling above.

Jump combines formal elegance and rigour with the allure of a physical experience, seducing the visitor to participate in the work, which would be incomplete without their involvement.

Physically and conceptually ambitious, the installation challenges and develops Koelewijn’s practice but retains his key preoccupations and modes of investigation. The viewer's engagement with his work reveals a set of complex ideas combined with a gentle, sophisticated and philosophically-edged humour.

Job Koelewijn was born in Spakenburg, the Netherlands, in 1962 and lives and works in Amsterdam. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam from 1987 to 1992 and spent a further year at the Sandberg Institute. In 1996 he spent a year in New York as an artist in residence at PS1. In 1999 and 2001 he participated in the Venice Biennale. His retrospective, People can only deal with the fantasy when they are ready for it, was held at Museum De Paviljoens in Almere in 2005.
