press release

An exhibition by one of the foremost contemporary photographers, Joel Peter Witkin, was organized by the Hellenic American Union in association with the Museum of New Mexico. The exhibition was held at the exhibition facilities of the School of Fine Arts. The exhibition included 129 works - 117 photographs by Witkin and 12 paintings, engravings and drawings by Pablo Picasso, Francisco Goya, Giorgio De Chirico, Paul Strand, Max Beckmann, Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse.

The world which Witkin depicts is often terrifying, grotesque and even repellent, for, like other great representatives of modernism, he redefines the concept of physical beauty and challenges our stereotyped attitudes to sexuality.

The artist himself and Steve Yates, curator of the exhibition attended the opening. To accompany the exhibition a special film with extracts from the following productions was screened: “Joel Peter Witkin, L’ image indelebile”, “Le Centre Georges Pompidou” by Jerome De Missolz, “Interview with the artist” by Philippe Azoulay, “The Photographic Adventure”, “Surrealism” and “Nude”.
