press release

Julian Opie has transformed his personal experience as a tourist in Bali into a series of generalized portraits, landscapes, and underwater seascapes that evoke a sense of idealized beauty and leisure through his signature style of simplified forms and shapes. For his project in Puck’s, the MCA restaurant, Opie created a virtual underwater oasis of black vinyl cut-outs of swimmers and fish arranged on the walls and windows, transforming the room into a playful environment full of movement, and emphasizing the presence of Lake Michigan only blocks away. The scenes are taken from photographs of his daughter and wife swimming in Bali. This will be Opie’s second solo museum exhibition in the United States. This exhibition is curated by Curatorial Assistant Julie Rodrigues Widholm. Pressetext
