Julião Sarmento presented a set of twelve paintings from the Domestic Isolation series, which continue the project the Artist presented at Sean Kelly Gallery, in New York, in April 2003. These works, which were produced on purpose for this exhibition, continued the path that the Artist began with the set of paintings he made 2003 S. Paulo Biennial and that introduced the cutting out of completely black shadows on a satin white background. The first works that introduced this device had a strange ambivalence, between the gestalt appearance of the cutout forms and the strongly sexual character of the recognizable motifs. In the Domestic Isolation series, the shadows of two feminine figures cross and mix themselves, allowing for a huge ground for the spectator’s speculation and thus reinforcing the compulsively fictional character that his work has been developing.
