Russia’s most prestigious Contemporary Art Award comes to London

London, 24 July 2009 --- Kandinsky Prize in London, supported by the Louise Blouin Foundation (London) and the Kandinsky Prize (Moscow), will introduce some of the most innovative young artists working in Russia today. Oleg Kulik has been invited to curate an exhibition that will take shape with a selection of artists represented in the Kandinsky Prize exhibition in Moscow, chosen by a panel of curators and art and media publishers and writers to represent the diversity of styles and forms that new art in Russia is producing. Kandinsky Prize in London will be on view at the Louise Blouin Foundation, 3 Olaf Street, Holland Park. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday 14th October from 6.30 to 11.00pm.

The Kandinsky Prize was founded by Shalva Breus, publisher of ArtChronika Magazine and the Chairman on the Board of Trustees of the Kandinsky Prize. It is the most important contemporary art prize in Russia today.

Kandinsky Prize in London has been organised to coincide with the Frieze Art Fair and will serve as an important foil to this great annual survey of contemporary art. Acclaimed young architect, Boris Bernaskoni has been selected to create an environment for the art and has envisioned a fantastical and rustic Russian village installation to contrast with the exhibitions throughout the Foundation galleries. The content of the exhibition will range from painting to video, installation, documented performance, photography and sculpture. Russia has nurtured a crop of talented young artists who are as innovative and diverse as in China’s explosive scene and this exhibition is being structured to demonstrate that diversity and vitality.

Kandinsky Prize in London has been planned to showcase art that represent important trends, ideas and subjects in Russia today as a way to elucidate that which is unique to Russian art: its tradition, visual dialects and aesthetics. “While we live in an increasingly globalised society, it is vital we recognise that which is unique about specific cultures from across the world. By bringing the Kandinsky Prize to London, my sincere hope is that we can create a dialogue that celebrates these differences: differences of language, images, symbols, gestures and vocabulary, and at the same time creating resonance and understanding” says Louise Blouin, Founder and Chairman of the Louise Blouin Foundation.

Kandinsky Prize in London will be complimented by a series of lectures, workshops and events that form part of the ongoing programme at the Louise Blouin Foundation. Leading academics, curators, and critics will deliver talks and lead panel discussions which explore themes related to current affairs in Russia today.
