Katharina Grosse 'Chill Seeping'

Renowned worldwide for her expansive use of the painting medium, SCAD deFINE ART 2022 honoree Katharina Grosse challenges perceptions of surfaces and ideas of spectatorship, establishing fertile relations between colors, shapes, and elements of architecture and landscape. Across her decades-long career, she has thrived as the creator of this unique artistic lexicon.

Grosse’s exhibition Chill Seeping brings together large-scale works on canvas created between 2006 and the present alongside an expansive site-related installation specifically adapted to the gallery. The exhibition highlights Grosse’s relentless exploration of color and its agency in space, inviting viewers into an immersive dialogue with the environment.

Katharina Grosse (b. 1961, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany) studied at Kunstakademie Münster and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Her recent institutional exhibitions and in situ paintings include psychylustro for Philadelphia Mural Arts Programme; yes no why later at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow; Seven Hours, Eight Rooms, Three Trees at Museum Wiesbaden; Untitled Trumpet for the 56th Biennale di Venezia; Katharina Grosse at Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden, Germany; Rockaway for MoMA PS1’s Rockaway! program at Fort Tilden in New York; Asphalt Air and Hair at ARoS Triennial, Aarhus; This Drove My Mother Up the Wall at South London Gallery; The Horse Trotted Another Couple of Metres, Then It Stopped at Carriageworks, Sydney; Wunderbild at National Gallery in Prague; Mumbling Mud at chi K11 art museum in Shanghai and chi K11 art space in Guangzhou; the two-person show Mural: Jackson Pollock I Katharina Grosse at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Is It You? at the Baltimore Museum of Art; and It Wasn’t Us at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin. Her work is held in numerous prestigious international collections. She lives and works in Berlin and New Zealand.

Chill Seeping is organized by SCAD MOA adjunct curator Humberto Moro. It is presented as part of SCAD deFINE ART 2022.
