The Kunstverein Freiburg dedicates this exhibition to a figure who has developed a singular and marginal practice of offering. For this first appearance and after two years of research in France and Japan, Eva Barto and Sophie Bonnet-Pourpet present “no hours left for else”, a monographic collection.

The show features about thirty selected belongings, implements, strategies and things offered or planned to be so. The overall reveals, under elements of a certain oddness, a whole apparatus both obsessive and critical, a way of living. We see the collection getting tinged with ambiguities, refined according to the seasons and sometimes falling into contradictions.

The differentiated practice of giving displayed by the collection convokes and twists the concepts traditionally associated to the gift economy. Thereby, some of the elements are striving to describe specific ownership conditions*, such as contractual givings, negotiated profits, relative obligations, hosting issues, shared properties, time loans, debts to be honoured …

By summoning addresses, transferability and (dis)possessions, the exhibition agitates the gesture of the artist and the philanthropist in a thought of production, circulation and acquisition of art.

Eva Barto (* 1987, France) convokes ambiguities related to property issues (territorial, financial, intellectual ...), which she feeds by manipulating the uses of power and judicial language while striving to the transparency of face-offs, winnings and losses. She has exhibited at Villa Arson, Nice (2016); gb agency, Paris (2016), Marcelle Alix, Paris (2015). Her work has been included in group shows at Kunsthal Arhus (2018); Secession, Vienna (2018); CCA Wattis Institute, San Francisco (2018); Max Mayer Gallery, Düsseldorf (2018); Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard, Paris (2017); Kadist Foundation, Paris (2016); Biennale de Rennes (2016). In 2016 she initiated the publishing project Buttonwood.Press.

Sophie Bonnet-Pourpet (* 1988, France) has composed, these past years, objects intended to some persons in particular, such as gifts or offerings. She dedicates herself to the study of their characters, digests stories and aesthetics, to form sculptures or texts, like exercises of style, to the taste of those they are addressed to — whether they are delivered to them or not. She has exhibited, for instance at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, where she was resident at the Pavilion (2013-14); at Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard, Paris (2016) and at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Villeurbanne (2013-2015). Her work has also been shown in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Lithuania, Israel, Singapore and the United States.
