Kendell Geers was born in the Republic of South Africa. He lives and works in Brussels. In 1993 he decided to change his date of birth, choosing May 1968, in the “year of protest”. This was the first in a series of provocative actions carried out by the artist as part of a study in which he analysed a problematic personal identity in the light of political and social events. As from the mid-1990s, Geers – who is also a critic and curator – stepped into the international limelight with his participation in a number of important events (Johannesburg Biennale, 1997; Carnegie International, Pittsburgh, 1999; Le Magazine, Grenoble, 2000; Berlin Biennale, 2001).
In his works, which include objects, installations and photographs, he expresses the problems brought about by an existential condition: that of being white and South African. This leads him to state: “I see myself as the quintessence of Africa: if I’m not black outside, I must be inside.”
