The first edition of La Biennale de Montréal, which is an international biennial, took place from August 27th to October 18th, 1998. It was put together by the CIAC (Centre international d’art contemporain de Montréal), which between 1985 and 1996 has produced the annual event Les Cent jours d’art contemporain de Montréal. The chief curator and artistic director of the biennial was Claude Gosselin, director of the Centre international d’art contemporain de Montréal.
La Biennale de Montréal 1998 falls under the title of Poetry, Humour and the Everyday. This theme has received the approval of the invited artists and their representatives. The theme has aroused curiosity in respect to the part devoted to humour.

The biennial introduced the entire visual arts network in the city: museums, galleries, exhibition centres, artist run centres, cultural centres... The biennial also familiarized the public with professionals in the visual arts: artists, professors, independent and museum curators.
La Biennale de Montréal is currently the only international biennial in Eastern North America. The biennial is in the heart of a territory of 50 million inhabitants which includes the cities of New York, Boston, Toronto, Chicago, Quebec, Ottawa, Montreal. These cities offer a real potential for cultural tourists ready to come to Montreal for this kind of event. La Biennale de Montréal 1998 contributes as well to the international image of Montreal, which is the metropolis of Quebec and the cultural metropolis of Canada.
