press release

PUBLIC ART PROJECT BY LAWRENCE WEINER CELEBRATED CONVERSATION WITH ARTIST, RECEPTION AT SITE PART OF DEDICATION EVENTS To celebrate the installation of artist Lawrence Weiner’s Wexner Center project, a day of free public events—including a booksigning, a conversation with the artist, and a dedication reception—will be held October 3, 2002. Internationally renowned for his text-based works in public spaces, Weiner has embedded black bricks into two existing red bricks circles on pathways near the newly renovated Mirror Lake Hollow—in The Ohio State University’s South Oval—to create the text for his outdoor project UNTIL IT IS. On view through July of 2004, the words read: PUT WHERE IT WAS NOT / USED AS IT WAS NOT / LEFT WHERE IT IS / UNTIL IT IS. A second component of the project is a 1 minute, 30 second sound piece created by Weiner in the Wexner Center’s Art & Technology studio. This audio piece, to be aired on local radio station CD101.1 FM and Ohio State student radio station The Underground (which also streams live on www.underground.fm), features statements akin to the phrases of the outdoor work. The radio spots will air September 27–October 10, 2002. Lawrence Weiner: UNTIL IT IS was organized by independent curator Carlos Basualdo—former chief curator of exhibitions at the Wexner Center and co-curator of Documenta XI in Kassel, Germany—and co-produced by the Wexner Center’s Kelly Merryman and Steve Hunt. The project is part of Notations, a series of site-specific artists’ projects in non-traditional spaces, organized by the Wexner Center. ARTIST’S BOOK A 40-page illustrated artist’s book (14 inches wide, 6 inches high), designed by Weiner and including essays by critic Liz Kotz and project curator Carlos Basualdo, accompanies this exhibition. It will be available for $32.95 at the Wexner Center Bookshop and the Wexner Center Artshop at Easton, on the Bookshop online (www.wexarts.org/bks), and during the booksigning on October 3. LAWRENCE WEINER For the past four decades, Weiner, an internationally known artist based in New York, has exhibited his text-based pieces around the world on everything from gallery walls to manhole covers. His work has been shown at the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among other museums. EXHIBITION SUPPORT Lawrence Weiner: UNTIL IT IS is organized by the Wexner Center. It is presented with support from the Corporate Annual Fund of the Wexner Center Foundation.
