Lee Bul

The Vancouver Art Gallery presents a survey exhibition of recent works by Korean artist Lee Bul, one of the most important artists of her generation. Early drawings and models are paired with ambitious sculptures revealing Bul's visually and conceptually compelling practice.

Acclaimed for her Cyborg sculptures of the 1990s that draw upon elements of art history, critical theory and science fiction, Lee Bul's more recent work explores the future of the past through elaborate sculptures and assemblages that reflect upon utopian architecture of the early 20th century, as well as architectural images of totalitarianism that are echoes of the artist's experience living in military-controlled Korea.

Based on a touring exhibition organized by Espai d'art contemporani de Castelló, Castellon; Musée d'art moderne et contemporain Saint-Étienne Métropole; and Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, with Coordinating Curator Daina Augaitis, Chief Curator/Associate Director, Vancouver Art Gallery.
