Lesley Vance: The Palm Over My Blonde

David Kordansky Gallery is pleased to announce The Palm Over My Blonde, an exhibition of new work by Los Angeles based painter Lesley Vance. The opening reception will take place on Friday, April 22nd at 6pm and the exhibition will be on view through Saturday, May 28th.

In her first solo show in the United States, Lesley Vance presents works that both exemplify the style through which she has identified herself and the desire to push her painting into new fields and perspectives. The paintings have a fairy tale quality that brings to mind the work of the Brothers Grimm and Lewis Carrol. This tone supplies a point of reference for the anthropomorphic flow between human and natural forms. Vance explores the nature of representation in large-scale works that depict overlooked details from the everyday filtered through memory and then paint. The surfaces reveal a light viscosity, covered with drips and droops, emulating the play the artist has with her observations of plant life in the real world. Mossy overgrowth, willows and other lush foliage hide their painted dimensionality becoming wet, sticky, and seemingly inhabitable. Vance's process focuses on the boundaries between the real and the unreal, memory and actuality, and the creation of imagery that is the literal space of exchange from one realm to another.

Lesley Vance's work has recently been the subject of a solo exhibition at Bowie-Van Valen in Amsterdam. She has been included in The New Romantics at Greene Naftali among many other exhibitions. Vance has a two-person show with Violet Hopkins at Stuart Shave/Modern Art in London, November 2005.
