The Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-06 holds an unrivaled position in the imagination of the American mind. Utilizing three overarching themes of the Lewis and Clark expedition journals—place, race, and memory—to explore increasingly complex relationships between land and culture in the American West and across the country, the exhibition presents 75 recent works by 20 artists including painting, photography, video, and installation as well as contemporary works created in such traditional Native American techniques as carving, beadwork, and basketry.

Organized by Rock Hushka, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Tacoma Art Museum, Washington.

Featured artists: Victoria Adams, Anne Appleby, Leo Saul Berk, Jackie Larsen Bread, Michael Brophy, Ron Carraher, Corwin Clairmont, Sally Cleveland, Chris Faust, Joe Feddersen, Juanita Growing Thunder Fogarty, Pat Courtney Gold, Linda Oyatewaste Haukaas, Maynard White Owl Lavadour, Rachel Maxi, Dorothy Morgan, Ken Moylan, Megan Murphy, Marvin Oliver, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Martin Red Bear, Peter Rostovsky, Mark Ruwedel, Susan Seubert, Bently Spang, Terry Toedtemeier, Alice Wheeler, Robert Yoder
