Liam Gillick

British artist Liam Gillick merges aspects of architecture, interior and industrial design, and sculpture in works that comment on the era of modernism and the ideals of modern art. Though trained at Goldsmiths College in London in the late 1980s alongside many of the major figures of the so-called YBA (Young British Artists) movement that defined the 1990s, Gillick's more conceptually-based projects are refreshingly distinct from the expressive sensationalism characteristic among his contemporaries. As much a writer as a maker of objects, he has also worked extensively as a designer, critic, and curator.

Gillick's minimalist-inspired structures suggest the way ideologies linger in the manmade forms that surround us. For this exhibition, Gillick will create a new artwork to be installed on the grounds at the Aspen Institute, whose campus of modernist buildings built beginning in the 1950s (and their "silent ideology") uncannily echoes the forms and ideas in Gillick's art, and vice versa. Gillick is uniquely qualified to both compliment and enliven the structures in and around this historic Aspen site.

Although he has exhibited widely throughout Europe, his work is relatively little-known in the United States, particularly outside of New York. This project is Gillick's first outdoor presentation in the U.S.
