Lisi Raskin

Signal is proud to present Project Esrange, an exhibition by New York based artist Lisi Raskin.

Raskin has over the past several years been interested in exploring psychological states through the physical transformation of materials. This fear-based fascination with high-technology functions as the starting-point for the formation of the fictional characters and invented narratives characteristic in her artistic praxis. Project Esrange consists of a slide show of photographic research, an in-situ intervention, and a video inspired by the artist’s recent trip to the Swedish Space Corporation´s Esrange Launch Site. Esrange is the only space-station in Sweden and it is situated in the Arctic Circle, about 40 km north-east of Kiruna.

Raskin´s interest in exploring the sublime has often provoked excursions to various specifically charged locations like the Oakridge National Laboratory, the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and former East German Atomic Bunkers. In addition, she has spent countless hours gazing at empty lots, waiting in fast food drive-thru lines and observing the world from various vehicles at high speeds and altitudes. These activities have then informed the making of drawings, objects, videos and installations that simultaneously quell and stimulate her fear of technological progress and pathology.

Project Esrange is a co-production between Lisi Raskin, Signal, and Gävle Konstcentrum, where it will be presented later this summer as part of a larger exhibition incorporating the artist´s expanded research.

Lisi Raskin was born 1974 in Miami, Florida and received an MFA from Columbia University School of Arts in 2003. Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions like Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, CAC in Vilnius and P.S.1 in New York. She is currently an artist in residence at IASPIS in Stockholm.
