First exhibited in Whare at the Art and Industry Biennial 2002, Lonnie Hutchinson takes a break from the paper and scissors to make an exquisitely animated video which continues her interest in patterning and decoration. Set to a remixed version of Black Magic Woman, sung by Auckland’s Ladi6, Red explores notions of whenua—the colour red being a natural earth pigment associated with, and sourced from, Papatuanuku, the Earth Mother.
