Maria Lassnig (1919–2014) is one of the most important artists of her generation. The Museum Folkwang is honouring her seminal body of work with a comprehensive retrospective centred on her superlative paintings and films. Lassnig’s exploration of her own bodily sensations and their visual rendering were the impulse behind and subject of her creative output. This ambitious, perhaps even impossible project preoccupied her for her entire life. At the heart of the exhibition are Lassnig’s self-portraits, her reflections on the painting process within the image, and her striking representations of body-object hybrids.
