Maria Marshall: Lollipop

Ratio 3 is pleased to present Maria Marshall: Lollipop , on view from April 1 to May 15, 2005.

Maria Marshall will present Lollipop (In 200 Days I'll be 11), a spaghetti Western-style film in 6 1⁄2 seconds. Shot on 35mm film, Lollipop captures Marshall's son, wearing tan make-up and painted on stubble, sucking on a lollipop. Looped and set to a mesmerizing score by Damon Albarn, of the band Blur, the film pays homage to Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood's man-with-no-name persona. The wide-screen matting, ominous music, intensity of the boy's gaze, and the sheer invisibility of the loop all combine to create a contemplative and ultimately unnerving experience.

Born in Bombay, India, in 1966, Marshall earned degrees from the Wimbledon School of Art and Chelsea School of Art, London. Since her debut at Team, New York (1998), Marshall's work has had solo shows in museums and galleries throughout the world, including Cosmic, Paris (2004), Centre our l'image Contemporaine, Geneva (2004), Salon 94, New York (2003), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2002), The Swiss Institute, New York (2002). Her work has been exhibited in group shows internationally, including the South London Gallery (2004), Fonds Regional d'Art Contemporain, Marseille (2004), Whitney Museum of American Art (2003), Centro de Arte de Salamanca, Salamanca, Spain (2003), and the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge (2002). Later this year she will have solo shows at Arndt & Partner, Berlin, and Galleria Raffaela Cortese, Milan. She is represented in New York by Team Gallery. This is Marshall's first solo exhibition with Ratio 3.
