“If the Form Vanishes, Its Root Is Eternal”: in this verse by the mystic poet Rumi, one can recognize Mario Merz’s complex view, based on the ideal dynamic continuity of the cosmos, of living creatures, and of nature’s processes of transformation. His poetic and cognitive investigation is a search for the principles that govern the organic universe articulated through works that represent progressive discoveries within the secrets of the perceptible world.

The exhibition at Castello di Rivoli brings together some of the most significant periods in Merz’s evolution, beginning in 1968, the year when he began to employ the form of the igloo, connecting the present to a prehistoric past. A dwelling structure and archaic metaphor for the cosmos, the igloo is part of nomadic culture, and consistent with this principle, it is the form that accompanies the artist’s development.
