press release

The exhibition of Marju Mutsu's (b. 6 July 1941, d. 4 January 1980) prints at the Kumu Art Museum is a selection of the artist's etchings, with a focus on the phenomenon of time, as well as the artist's ability to capture the fleeting moment. Marju Mutsu's moments contain both captured glances and inner turmoil, as well as the primeval beauty of nature. The artist, who was surrounded by the enchantment of youth, looked at the world with a mature and observant eye. Her oeuvre raises serious questions but also offers visual enjoyment. The majority of the printmaker's work was completed in the 1970s; yet, even during such a short period she managed to bring many fresh thoughts into Estonian art. In the final years of Marju Mutsu's life, her characteristic youthful hunger for life, constantly changing moods, openness to artistic solutions and sincerity of expression were replaced by unique dense shapes and images, which can be seen as philosophical observations or aphorisms in print.
