press release

Fir, Peony, Apple Tree, Leaf of Hearts, Seedlings... Plants, seed capsules, roots and flowers glow out of Marjukka Vainio´s production. Her latest works can be seen in her major summer exhibition Light of the Earth. Many of them are being seen for the first time.

Marjukka Vainio (b. 1953) is known for poetic works that view plants from very close to. Her powerful images can express the symbolism of the cycles of nature, memories and magic, or the private happiness of the home gardener. They bear comparison with the precision of botanical images and the ornaments in decorative art. The most recent works in the Light of the Earth series combine light and dark, murky and bright hues, minimalist compositions and organic forms.

Vainio makes her prints using experimental exposure and printing techniques that she has developed herself. Some start from a photogram -exposing the object directly onto photographic paper. This technique harks back to the origins of photography: to light, chemistry and optical phenomena. The original print, a "paper slide", is often a unique silver-dye-bleach print (Ilfochrome Classic), with new technology allowing her to make larger works and small print series. Some of her earlier works can also be seen in portfolios at the exhibition.

The Light of the Earth exhibition will also be shown at Hämeenlinna Art Museum, 28.9. -12.11.2006. Some of the works have been shown in Marjukka Vainio´s extensive solo exhibition in Luleå, Sweden, and Strasbourg, France.
