press release

Tramway presents the first solo exhibition of Mark Raidpere’s work in the UK.

Mark Raidpere (bn.1975) represented his native country of Estonia at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005. Often using himself or those closest to him in his work, he explores themes of identity, marginalisation and isolation. Mark Raidpere’s work as an artist since 1997 links visually to an earlier career as a fashion photographer, in the strong colour or shadow contrast and single camera shots of his video pieces.

Surface allure, however, contrasts with the utilisation of a low tech / low cost tool for communication, for making the personal public, alluding to the potential for conflict between expressions of identity in a country still ascertaining its own cultural, political and financial stability.

This work highlights the space between truth and lies, between sanity and madness and between public and private identities; and the role of art in delineating, editing or manipulating this state of being.
