press release

In 2004, Daiter Contemporary showcased Martin Parr's widely acclaimed, seminal collection, "Common Sense." Since then, this UK artist has worked at a frenetic pace, practically unmatched in today's art world, and we are pleased to present his newest work in the exhibition Fashion Show.

In recent years, fashion photography has become an increasingly important context for Parr to explore his particularly witty brand of social commentary. For this project, he produced the aptly titled Fashion Magazine (Paris: Magnum Photos, 2005), a collection of advertisements, short essays, interviews, and discerning, often humorous photographs which elaborate on the concept of the individual power and collective force of fashion.

Fashion Show highlights a variety of images from the book and gives a glimpse of the range of Parr's latest efforts. From candid portraits taken in the streets of Dakar and Essex to highly stylized advertisements (for the likes of Paul Smith and Valentino Garavani) shot in Miami Beach and New York, these large-scale, colorful prints illuminate how the intricate signs and symbols of fashion permeate culture and transcend geographic boundaries. In offering comparisons between the refined fashions of high society and the more modest vestments of everyday life, Parr reminds us that everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status or geographic locale, seeks to access the unique, storytelling powers of fashion.

Daiter Contemporary invites you to experience (once again) Martin Parr's ability to combine the sensibilities of playful social satire with keen social observation.
