press release

The British artist Martin Riches is intensely fascinated by mechanical systems. By means of mechanical constructions, electronics and computer programming, Martin Riches creates beautiful and ingenious machines that imitate human behaviour.

This is particularly evident in Talking Machine, a work in which Riches plays with the fact that the human voice can be viewed as an instrument. The music created by this machine consists of words and sentences produced by wooden pipes, carved so as to correspond exactly to the laryngal cavity that enables human beings to form the basic sounds of language. Language is transformed into music, and the artful, mechanical construction takes on a life of its own. The exhibition, the first presentation of Martin Riches in Denmark, comprises eleven works in all.

The exhibition is sponcered by British Council and Oticon Foundation Pressetext
