Matthias Bitzer
March 14 - May 2, 2020

“There's a sort of path that exists in my head that has a lot to do with distance and dimensions and it’s surprising how people often instinctively follow this path that I thought of but that isn't specified.” (Matthias Bitzer)

The coexistence of different truths and identities forms the conceptual core of Matthias Bitzer's work. His precisely installed sculptures, drawings and paintings construct a mesh situated between abstraction and representation, word and image, fiction and reality, allowing the viewer to physically and mentally experience the dissolution of temporal and spatial orientation. While in earlier series, contrasting historical characters such as Fernando Pessoa, Emmy Ball-Hennings or Bertolt Brecht marked the starting point, Bitzer's most recent works increasingly abstract the concept of experiencing reality in a contradictory way. The focus is now on the subjective experience of the relationship between body, space and identity.

Matthias Bitzer (DE 1975) has shown in numerous international exhibitions. In May 2020 Kunsthalle Göppingen shows his next solo exhibition. Previous solo exhibitions have been on view at Kunstverein Leverkusen (2019), K21 Kunstsammlung-Nordrhein Westfalen (2015-16), Kunstverein Hannover (2010) or Städtische Galerie Nordhorn (2007). His works are part of institutional collections such as LACMA Los Angeles, Marta Herford Museum or Kunstsammlung Gera.
