press release

The extraordinary oeuvre of Max Beckmann has been shown at a large number of important exhibitions over the last decades, which makes it even more surprising that he has yet to be appreciated as a “painter on paper”. This exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Schirn Kunsthalle of Frankfurt, will include one hundred watercolors and pastels, including large format works, and represents the first opportunity to see the essential aspects of his work and the importance of watercolors for Beckmann. In contrast to his paintings, in which the problems of history and human existence were condensed, the watercolors reveal his sense of humor, wit, and a powerful spontaneity, revealing little-known aspects of the work of this great master.
