press release

The exhibition opens on Thursday 15 September 2016 in the presence of the artist. You are welcome at FOAM Amsterdam from 5.30 pm onwards.

AKINCI is proud to announce the first museum solo exhibition at FOAM of Melanie Bonajo, who holds a unique position in contemporary art. She has become an unconventional artist working in different disciplines including photography, video, installations, publications, performance and music. An interesting feature is her anarchist approach and her dynamic ability to constantly escape social conventions.

Since 2012, Melanie Bonajo has been working on her video trilogy Night Soil. In semi-documentary style, she explores how modern man does everything to fight feelings of fragmentation and alienation, caused by technological progress and the temptations of the consumer culture. New rituals, a different relationship with nature and shifting ideas about gender fill a nagging sense of emptiness. Melanie Bonajo portrays this in an enthused, graceful and sometimes absurdist way and is not afraid to include herself. Foam premieres the third and final part of the trilogy, Nocturnal Gardening. The videos are presented in an installation in which the visitor is submerged.
