press release

Michal Rovner’s last exhibition in Israel was held at the Helena Rubinstein Pavilion for Contemporary Art in Winter 1990-91. Since then she has had numerous one-artist shows abroad and in 2003 was chosen as Israel’s representative at the Venice Biennale, where she gained international renown.

The current exhibition includes large-scale video works and installations that were shown in Venice and at the Jeu de Paume, Paris. Her recent works were done in the wake of her visit in Autumn 2004 to the oil fields in Kazakhastan and the sights of the gas flames dotting the desolate, infinite expanses. The farther away she got from the place of the occurrence and the more she lingered over the materials she brought with her from Kazakhastan, the experience of the oil fields seems to have gradually lost the specificity of the place, becoming the memory of natural forces, of a constantly changing landscape, even if that changing may be hidden from our eyes.

Curator Prof. Mordechai Omer

The exhibition is held in cooperation with the Jeu de Paume, Paris, and the PaceWildenstein Gallery, New York.
