press release

Mikkel McAlinden (b. 1963) is one of Norway's most important artists of his generation. He began his artistic career with a series of staged photographs, which gradually included references to central motifs from the history of painting, taking his material from Dutch 17th century art via Impressionism to the works of Edvard Munch. Throughout the 1990s, McAlinden's motifs became progressively more everyday in character, but were nonetheless staged in a manner which frequently encompassed the viewer himself. His later nature motifs also have a constructed quality which, remarkably, creates both closeness and distance to the motif. The special spatial effects in McAlinden's more recent photographs are a result of a painstaking digital synthesis of a number of individual motifs. The exhibition is the largest presentation of Mikkel McAlinden's works ever shown. It is part of the EU-funded Visual Community Network exhibition collaboration project, and will also be shown at Nederlands fotomuseum in Rotterdam. Pressetext
