Mixtapes

Mixtapes presents four groundbreaking film and video installations that consider the intersections of youth and musical subcultures, documentary filmmaking, nostalgia, and memory.

A mini–film festival, Mixtapes, is being shown in a quasi-theatrical setting at the Oliver Art Center, Oakland. The works range in length from six to twenty-three minutes. Each shows for ten days.

Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore, Jan 23–Feb 8 Mark Leckey's Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore is a documentary of sorts that charts the rise of British youth dance subcultures, while ultimately reflecting on the collective loss of innocence as each subculture inevitably yields to the next.

Lights (Body), Feb 11–22 Wolfgang Tillmans's Lights (Body) offers the excitement of a nightclub soundtrack, but the only sign of the human body is dust flakes—shed by dancing bodies—floating in the bright lights.

Mixtape, Feb 25–Mar 8 In Mixtape, Oliver Payne and Nick Relph construct sequences of images and sound that celebrate the rawness of youth culture without the intervention of corporate images of "cool."

Actualité, Mar 25–Apr 5 Mathias Poledna's Actualité shows the rehearsal of a fictional band of the late 1970s or early 1980s, with a wealth of references to the history of film—notably in the title's nod to the Actualités of the Lumière brothers, who were among the earliest of filmmakers.
